a medium size oval well filled nut. It is a seedling of 'Faroka', a Turkish tree hazel hybrid crossed with European hazel. 'Faroka' was crossed by Jack Gellatly from Kelowna, BC. 'Alex' is a moderate annual bearing, strong upright tree. It has potential as a pollinizer. The alleles are 11 and 30. It is bud mite and highly blight resistant. We recommend it as a pollinizer for zone 6b-8. The female bloom is hardy for climate zones 6a-8.
These Hybrid seedlings (Corylus hybrid) were grown from seed from 'Alex' cultivar parent trees. They are a very easy nut tree to grow in terms of growing well with little care in multiple soil types, and they are resilient to deer browsing (i.e., no protection needed). They produce a medium, well-filled nut and bears nuts annually. Also, it is bud mite and highly resistant to Eastern Filbert Blight.
Hazelnut trees (Corylus hybrid) offer a range of benefits in various aspects of agriculture, nutrition, and environmental conservation. Firstly, they provide a sustainable and nutritious source of food, as hazelnuts are rich in healthy fats, protein, and various essential nutrients. Secondly, hazelnut trees can be used in agroforestry systems to improve soil quality and reduce erosion, sequestering carbon dioxide and supporting biodiversity, as they provide habitat and food for various wildlife species.
